Frequently Asked Questions
The Grief and Growth Experience
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this therapy?
No. This is grief coaching. I think of therapy as more clinical, where someone has been formally educated in behavioral health concepts and treatment. Grief coaching is more focused on support, conversation, encouragement, and navigating life after loss with someone who understands widowhood firsthand.
Are you a licensed therapist?
No, I am a certified grief coach. If you feel like you need therapy or mental health treatment, I encourage you to look into licensed resources in your area.
Do I have to be religious or spiritual to work with you?
No. I am open to all beliefs, backgrounds, and lifestyles. While I was raised in the Lutheran church and would personally describe myself as spiritual, my coaching is not centered around religion.
Can I just do a connection call first?
Absolutely. I actually encourage people to start with a connection call before committing to anything so we can see if we are a good fit.
Do I have to commit to multiple sessions?
No. This is completely up to you. Some people book one session at a time, while others prefer more ongoing support.
How often should sessions happen?
This looks different for everyone and can also change depending on what someone is going through at the time. Some people prefer regular support, while others reach out only during especially difficult seasons
Do I have to turn my camera on?
If we are doing a video session, yes. I believe the face-to-face connection is important. If video is not possible for you, we can discuss setting up a phone session instead.
What if I cry the whole session?
Then you cry! Grief is emotional, and sometimes letting those emotions out instead of holding them in can be incredibly healing. I’ve cried plenty too.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s okay. As the grief coach, I’ll help guide the conversation. If you have something specific you want to focus on, we can absolutely do that. If not, I’ll ask questions and we’ll see where the conversation naturally goes. This is not a rigid or structured session, it’s a conversation with another human who gets it.
Can I talk about things other than grief?
Yes. Widowhood affects every part of life, and you are welcome to talk about whatever you need to.
How soon after losing my spouse should I reach out?
Whenever you feel ready. You can be one month out or seven years out. I think of it as recognizing a need in yourself and deciding you don’t want to carry it alone anymore.
